What Are MerFolk?
Mermaids and Mermen are traditionaly humans from the waist up, but fishes from the waist down. There are a few exceptions:

These creatures were most of the time known to help the wayward sailor or fisherman, and were creatures that brought good luck. To harm a merfolk was to bring bad luck upon yourself for many years to come.
When the Crusades started it was considered "unchristian" to believe in merfolk. The mermaid; with her comb and mirror in hand; came to represent to the Church vanity and female beauty which could cause the destruction of the male gender.
Many People still believe in Merfolk today. There are still sightings of these magical creatures to this day.
